Living in Montclair

Montclair sits on the western edge of San Bernardino County, right where the Inland Empire meets Los Angeles County. Pomona and Claremont border it to the west and north, Upland and Ontario to the east, and Chino to the south. The city began as the Monte Vista citrus tract, incorporated in 1956 and took the name Montclair in 1958. Most of its housing went up in the decades after World War II, so expect plenty of single-story homes on established streets, plus condos, townhomes and newer projects near transit.

Getting around is the city's strongest selling point. Interstate 10 runs across the north side of town, and the 57, 60, 71 and 210 freeways are a short drive away. The Montclair Transcenter on Arrow Highway has Metrolink San Bernardino Line trains to Union Station, along with Foothill Transit and Omnitrans buses. Ontario International Airport sits just east of the city line, and in 2024 Metro approved funding to extend the A Line light rail from Pomona to the Transcenter.

Shopping centers on Montclair Place, the regional mall just north of the 10. The city's Montclair Place District Specific Plan, approved in 2020, lays out a phased shift toward a walkable, mixed-use downtown on and around the mall property. Near the Transcenter, the North Montclair Downtown Specific Plan guides new townhomes and apartments close to the trains.

Public schools fall under the Ontario-Montclair School District for kindergarten through eighth grade and the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, which runs Montclair High School on Benito Street. For recreation, Alma Hofman Park, known locally as Shark Park, has a skate park, tennis and basketball courts and a summer splash pad. Saratoga Park has a renovation project for its ballfields and play areas, and the historic Reeder Ranch preserves a piece of the citrus era.

Montclair neighborhoods & communities

North Montclair and the Transcenter

The blocks around the Montclair Transcenter and Arrow Highway mix established single-family streets with newer townhome and single-family projects such as The District at Arrow Station. This is the part of town for buyers who want Metrolink close by.

Montclair Place District

North of Interstate 10, the area around Montclair Place is where the city plans its future downtown. Nearby homes and condos keep shopping, dining and the freeway a few minutes away.

Central Montclair

South of the 10 toward Holt Boulevard, tree-lined residential streets hold much of the city's post-war single-story housing, close to Montclair High School and Alma Hofman Park on Benito Street.

South Montclair

Below Holt Boulevard toward the Chino line, you'll find mostly single-family homes with some small multifamily properties, a quick drive from the 60 and 71 freeways.

Buying a home in Montclair

Montclair is small, so the right home often comes down to a few blocks. Before you tour homes for sale in Montclair, decide whether Metrolink access, quick freeway on-ramps or a bigger yard matters most, because those priorities point you to different parts of 91763. Many homes were built in the post-war decades, so budget for a thorough inspection that includes the sewer line, electrical panel and any room additions, and confirm that additions were permitted. If you're using an FHA loan or a first-time buyer program, Jorge can line up financing before you write an offer so your bid holds up against conventional buyers.

Selling a home in Montclair

Buyers shopping Montclair are usually comparing it with Ontario, Upland, Pomona and Chino, so your price has to make sense against all of them. Jorge pulls comparable sales from your section of the city, not just the ZIP code, because a home near the Transcenter can draw a different buyer than one south of Holt. Small updates go a long way on older homes: fresh paint, updated lighting, a tidy yard and pre-listing inspections for the roof and sewer line. Professional photos, video and targeted online ads in English and Spanish put your listing in front of more buyers.

Is Montclair in Los Angeles County or San Bernardino County?

Montclair is in San Bernardino County, right on the Los Angeles County line, with Pomona and Claremont as its neighbors to the west and north. The entire city shares one ZIP code, 91763. Because of that location, buyers often compare Montclair with Pomona and Claremont as well as Ontario, Upland and Chino. Jorge can prepare a free report comparing all of them.

How is the commute from Montclair to Los Angeles?

Montclair is one of the best-connected cities in the West End. The Montclair Transcenter has Metrolink San Bernardino Line service to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, plus Foothill Transit and Omnitrans buses. Drivers use Interstate 10, which crosses the north side of the city, and the 57, 60, 71 and 210 are close. Metro also approved funding in 2024 to extend the A Line light rail to the Transcenter.

How do I sell my house in Montclair for the right price?

Start with a pricing analysis built on recent sales from your part of Montclair, since homes near the Transcenter, north of the 10 and south of Holt can attract different buyers. Then handle the easy fixes, gather permits for any additions and schedule pre-listing inspections. Jorge's free home valuation is the first step, and he'll explain every offer and escrow document along the way.

Is Montclair a good place to buy a home?

Montclair offers a central spot between Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, a Metrolink hub, Interstate 10 access and Ontario International Airport next door. Its housing is mostly established single-family homes, with newer townhomes near the Transcenter, and the city has an approved plan to turn the Montclair Place area into a mixed-use downtown.
